LPS GI Maintenance-Free Chemical Earthing Pipe – Technical Specification

The GI Maintenance-Free Chemical Earthing Pipe (LPS Type) is a high-performance grounding electrode designed to provide reliable and long-lasting earthing for electrical and lightning protection systems. This type of earthing electrode is widely used in industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects where stable earth resistance and minimal maintenance are required.

The electrode shall be constructed using high-quality Galvanized Iron (GI) material. The standard size of the electrode shall be 80 mm outer diameter and 3000 mm length (3 meters), with a wall thickness ranging from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm. The pipe shall be manufactured from mild steel and hot-dip galvanized to ensure superior corrosion resistance. The galvanization coating shall be in the range of 80 to 100 microns, providing protection against rust and ensuring a long service life even in aggressive soil conditions.

The construction of the earthing electrode shall be of pipe-in-pipe or strip-in-pipe design. It shall consist of an outer GI pipe and an inner GI pipe or GI strip, typically of size 25×3 mm or higher, which enhances electrical conductivity. The annular space between the pipes shall be filled with a highly conductive chemical compound such as a mixture of graphite, bentonite, or other crystalline conductive materials. This chemical filling plays a crucial role in reducing soil resistivity and maintaining moisture around the electrode.

The earthing electrode shall be capable of achieving an earth resistance value of 1 ohm or less, depending on soil conditions and proper installation. It shall be suitable for dissipating high fault currents, typically up to 25–50 kA for a short duration. The performance of the electrode shall remain stable across varying environmental conditions, including dry, rocky, or sandy soils.

One of the key features of this system is its maintenance-free operation. Unlike conventional earthing systems, this electrode does not require regular watering, as the chemical compound retains moisture and ensures consistent conductivity. This significantly reduces operational effort and maintenance costs over time.

The electrode shall be provided with a suitable GI terminal, typically 50×6 mm or 80×6 mm strip, with drilled holes for connection using nuts and bolts. Installation shall be carried out by placing the electrode vertically in a pit of approximately 3 meters depth and appropriate diameter. The pit shall be backfilled with conductive chemical compound, which shall be mixed with water at the time of installation to activate its properties.

This type of earthing system is suitable for use in lightning protection systems (LPS), substations, transformers, solar power plants, DG sets, and other critical electrical installations. The expected service life of the electrode shall be between 7 to 15 years, depending on soil conditions.

The entire system shall conform to the requirements of IS 3043 and relevant standards for earthing and grounding systems.
